Keeping on track

Sometimes keeping on track is easier said than done.  My students are somewhat struggling with Flash this semester.  I am learning but have a lot to learn.  I appreciate their patience and hope that all of our skills improve with time.

A Whirlwind Course

Minus the Memorial Day holiday, my students had 15 days to go from wiki and Flash basics to a game demo.  I am so proud of their success and effort in that time frame.  We met Monday through Thursday for three hours a day.  On many days we stayed a little longer (especially after entering the Flash world).

I had thought it was quite an experience to work with a colleague to create my own game demo.  It was so much more entertaining to work with students and see their ideas progress ... even change.  They all worked diligently and produced some good game demo results.  Only one student withdrew from the class due to missing a few days.  It became difficult to catch up after missing three days of an intense four-week class.  That would be the same situation with any course, though.

The ideas in this course will produce great games.  When these students were told to avoid quiz games, they listened.  Their game demos all show such great promise and most of them will return in the Fall semester to work in a 15-week period instead of 15-day to go from game demo to full game design.  I am excited for this time to begin.

I understand that Flash is a very useful tool.  It is complex.  After seeing all of the many directions that my students wanted to go, I called for a  Globaloria intern to join me for three days of class as the students were fully into their design efforts.  Carl was wonderful and we appreciate his drive to Parkersburg to assist us.

For the next few weeks, my students are taking a breather.  In that same time frame, I'll be having a baby.  But, this Fall, we'll be back and we expect great games to be produced!
